A driveway is a structural project, not a surface
A patio carries people and furniture. A driveway carries several thousand pounds landing on the same four contact patches every day, plus delivery trucks, plus a snowplow blade in February. The base depth and compaction that would be more than adequate under a patio is not adequate under a driveway, and the difference doesn't show up until the second or third winter.
We build driveways with a deeper excavation, a thicker compacted base, and herringbone paver pattern — which interlocks in two directions and resists the twisting force of turning wheels far better than running bond. Edge restraint gets particular attention, because the edge of a driveway is where failure starts.
Why homeowners here choose pavers over concrete

Snow removal and de-icing
Plowing a paver driveway is fine. Use a rubber-edged or skid-shoe blade rather than steel riding directly on the surface, the same as you would on decorative concrete. Shovels and blowers cause no issues.
For de-icing, sand and standard rock salt are both fine on the pavers themselves. We'd avoid the aggressive magnesium and calcium chloride blends where you have a choice — not because they damage pavers, but because they're hard on adjacent concrete and on landscaping at the edges.

Common questions
Do paver driveways hold up to Idaho winters?
Yes, when the base is built for it. Pavers handle freeze-thaw better than a poured slab because the joints let the surface flex with ground movement rather than cracking. The deciding factor is excavation depth, compaction and drainage below the surface.
Can you plow a paver driveway?
Yes. Use a rubber-edged or skid-shoe blade so steel isn't riding directly on the surface. Shovels and snow blowers are no problem at all.
Are pavers more expensive than a concrete driveway?
The install typically costs more than a plain concrete pour and less than stamped or coloured decorative concrete. The gap narrows over the life of the driveway, because a damaged paver section is lifted and replaced rather than patched or repoured.
Can you replace an existing concrete driveway with pavers?
Yes. We remove and haul off the existing slab, then excavate and build the base from there. Demolition and disposal are itemised separately in the written price so you can see what that portion costs.
